You can read his blog yourself, but the basic idea is that he chooses to run the blog, he's not forced to for financial reasons.
He has enough income from invested savings that he is not required to have more income to maintain his lifestyle.
He had the money to retire before the blog got big, but yes he and his wife still work, but only when they want to.
