Same as when every new format comes out -- give a few years for the hardware folks to iterate on the hardware.

Upon purchasing On2, It was Google's intention to release a new codec every 18-24 months or so. That would mean hardware would never catch up. However, Google didn't keep that pace. VP8 came out in 2010 and VP9 was 2013. AV1 was just released now. I would estimate that high end hardware launching in 2020 will have hardware decoding support for AV1. If AV2 doesn't launch until at least 2022, we'll have 2 good years :).

  • I believe Google has hired quite a few hardware engineers since 2010. :)

    • I bet. I believe Google offers reference implementations for free, but it's up to each hardware company (Nvidia, ARM, Intel etc..) to release a chip with hardware decoding enabled. Google can't do it for them.
