I had the exact same issue with my wife, my theory is that people with an inferiority complex will suppose response 1, and I think that has to do with them frequently exposed to people with superiority complex supposing 1 when they give them feedback.

My take on this is to target the inferiority complex by lifting them up, i now usually say:

I see you used X instead of Y, knowing you, I suppose this was not accidental / was deliberate and I’m now curious
