Ask “what have you tried already?”

If their answer doesn’t include sshd, give them the benefit of the doubt anyway and ask “what happened when you tried sshd?”

To avoid any likelihood of sounding like a jerk, phrase your inquiry in a manner that makes it clear you assume the other person is as smart as you.
