The goal of ethical research wouldn't be to protect the Linux kernel, it would be to protect the rights and wellbeing of the people being studied.

Even if none of the patches made into the kernel (which doesn't seem to be true, according to other accounts), it's still possible to do permanent damage to the community of kernel maintainers.
