Authenticating the remote end of the connection (which all decent software does because using it on other people's WiFi would be very unsafe otherwise) makes it irrelevant.

Could you elaborate on this?
I, too, would like to know the definitive answer to this, as I feel like a malicious DNS packet was used against a computer of mine before connected to the VPN.
Very serious attack...
