It really is a godawful abomination of the modern web. Every time I see a bastard thread emoji or a '1/?' at the end of the tweet I close the tab immediately and never come back. I just know there's going to be some endless screed by some moron who just keeps rambling on and on and won't shut up.

Part of it is to do with the reduced attention span of today's generation of overgrown children who never really reached adulthood in a meaningful way and who make up the majority of internet users. If they see a properly formatted blog article with actual structure and, God forbid, paragraphs, they'll have an immediate visceral reaction of "Eww, too many words!" and run crying to their mommy or safe space, whichever is less effort to get to.

However, if they see a nice little tweet which they can digest without having to go to the effort of actually using their brain, and a nice convenient "show more" button, they'll get sucked in, being spoon-fed one little fun-size morsel of drivel at a time. It's the same insidious dopamine feed that powers time-sink sites like Reddit with its dark-pattern of endless scrolling, keeping you desperately wanting more (in no small part just to get to the end) as each bit of the author's - sorry, tweeter's - latest tract gets revealed to you, bit by bit, but never enough to satisfy the urge. It's by design. Nuke Twitter.
