Discord does not allow third party clients. In my book that is as user hostile as it gets and due to my FOSSisms I'm effectively barred from using it.

Well I think you'd find that your first barrier would be the fact that most open source projects are run off of GitHub which is a company owned by Microsoft.
Does github limit what clients you're allowed to use with it?
