I don't buy it.
When you live in a small community, you get local news from your neighbors and friends, and Facebook if you have it (Facebook is essentially replacing the local news outlet in small towns, and that's worse than the problem stated in the article, but that's a different discussion). If it's important you'll hear about it. If it's unimportant you'll probably hear about it too.
The same applies to national news. 90% of it is unimportant. If it is actually important, like the fact that your bread prices will go up due to a war in Ukraine, you'll hear about it.
Sure, but what about medium sized communities?
The Bay Area has lots of local news outlets and even more local "boots on the ground" community blogs run by volunteers. I don't know if that's true around the rest of the country though.
