Reminds me a lot of this story, which was on HN recently, about the design of open spaces and how offices get them wrong: https://www.mtajchert.com/libraries-and-open-spaces/

Long story short, a lot of it is just related to the existing societal norms and expectations of different environments, similar to the author.
