There are fields where I feel confident to have an opinion, and fields where I am entirely out of my league.
HN is full of people like myself, each with their own partially overlapping fields of expertise.
When I see something new, I don't say "well, this goes against my intuition, it must be wrong". I say, "well, this is new, and sounds fishy - but is out of my field. I wonder what real geneticists on HN have to say about it".
There are a world of unintuitive facts that I have learned this way (I plan on making a site of such things, but.. maybe next week).
As they say, be open minded, but not enough to let your brain fall out.
you folks are clearly much smarter than me: i barely have time to make snarky comments on hn next to all the other enjoyable stuff i do in my life, nevermind actually purposefully dig into informational rubbish for reasons of misplaced curiosity
This is already being shown on Polish TV (which is known to be trash) almost as "a fact", I got called by my distraught mum who just watched this being talked about (in today's Teleexpress Extra).
Arguments made on HN (that the guy behind it made a fraud in 2017, that carbon dating makes no sense) helped me to argue with her that she shouldn't believe it before we hear more proof about it.
It's 99.99999999% likely to be total tripe, but I don't like the way you shut the door on it so strongly. You should allow even a small chance of it being correct, and a larger chance of it being incorrect but perhaps interesting.
I do notice, though, that no clear photos are shown of the alleged aliens, which is a pretty good sign somebody's not being open about something

We don't "believe", we're curious as everyone should be

So at least that's the value of discussing it
