Essentially, it’s an environment for writing+outlining+task tracking+time management. It’s incredibly useful — you should definitely try it since you’ve used Emacs.

Just like emacs itself, it's hard to describe what org-mode is, since it has so many features, most of which any individual probably won't use or even know about. You didn't mention tables, hyperlinks, tagging, exporting documents...
