The story of Grothendieck is really fascinating. He was a superstar in algebraic geometry, only to suddenly reject the endeavor of mathematics and going off to grow vegetables in the Pyrenees. He also demanded that all notes from his lectures be destroyed. But those notes existed in so many hands, I don’t think many people (if any) complied.
