Are chatbots of the dead a brilliant idea or a terrible one?

This is a false dichotomy. It's neither brilliant nor terrible. I could imagine their descendants 50, 100 or more years in the future being interested in what their thoughts were on recent events, what they thought of family, and stuff like that.

Ditto for historical figures.

People would be accustomed to the idea and understand these musings are a likeness and not necessarily exactly what that person would have thought.
