If it helps, at least two of my relatives were denied US visa when trying to visit relatives in US (who are citizens), as understood on account of being cisgendered females, which US government of the day saw as a risk of staying in the country illegally (not enough attachment to the country of origin). That was neither in 1960ies nor in the fascist clown times. Nobody was detained, just missed a wedding and some amount of time and money, but who cares about that.
