This is really interesting, because I generally specifically try to avoid software or libraries that I have to modify.
Modified software generally means manually merging changes for updates, remembering to manually check for those updates, adding build scripts to properly integrate it into the main project, etc.
And it also means the software you're using hasn't been audited or tested completely by anyone but you.
These kinda posts are almost always out of touch with the actual world. How many users are you aware of that are going to sit and modify software to meet their "needs". We live in a world where people need to be spoonfed everything, atleast vast majorities of them do. Most people in the world haven't even explored all the settings options on their mobile phone, let alone sit and customize your software to match their "needs". People will discard the bare minimum product and always go for the bloated one. There is a reason 8 billion people in the world are not running Unix on their machines daily
