The post argues that people cling to beliefs not because they ignore facts, but because belief-change requires restructuring entire systems of interconnected ideas that is emotionally and psychologically demanding.
This reminds me of a passage from yuval harari book Nexus : “…… even the most truthful accounts of reality can never represent it in full. There are always some aspects of reality that are neglected or distorted in every representation truth then isn’t a one-to-one representation of reality rather truth is something that brings our attention to certain aspects of reality while inevitably ignoring our aspects, no account of reality is hundred percent accurate, but some accounts are nevertheless more truthful than the others”
So belief system can be thought of perceived structured reality in one’s mind organized around some supporting facts. It would be valuable for researchers to examine and model what these belief system structure DAGs look like for groups with opposing views on major issues, such as climate change or democracy
