There is actually great value in confirming things we thought were probably right. A person upthread mentioned that the LHC hadn't discovered much new, but the vast majority of its data does provide confirmation of what we thought and when we talk about a "reproducibility crisis" it is actually good to know that these things are correct even if it's not headline news.
Yeah, "expected" is the scientific theory, JWST's observations are the evidence, or at least help refine the theory and come up with new ones.
And to rule things out.
