This article, more or less, gets posted to HN every month or so for like the last fifteen years. The question is, what are we going to do about it?
It feels like one of those intractable industry standards where nearly everyone beyond management is unhappy about, yet can't or won't do anything about. Other examples- restrictions on remote work, office open floor plans, Agile (not as unpopular, but you see some fierce criticism of it), etc.
It feels like preaching to a choir that never changes. Only external forces can shift these traditions. Like how the pandemic mandated teleconferencing, perhaps the proliferation of generative AI interview cheating software might eventually force companies to rethink their processes. And, most likely, they will just then simply make candidates interview on-site.
