I understand it, and it can be a good thing for women, but still also be discriminatory - isn’t it effectively taking rides away from men based on their sex? But also it feels inconsistent. Can people indicate preference based on race or religion? What about political affiliation or immigration status? Or whatever else? Why, why not?

Right. There may be other prior assumptions to examine also.
1. they're obviously feeling the heat from driverless
2. if you're going to add this feature, just let anyone choose any gender. that way your company is not objectively discriminatory.
