I've always been under the impression that M:tA's rules of How Magic Works are inspired by actual mystical beliefs that people have practiced for centuries. It's probably about as much of a magical for mystical development as the GURPS Cyberpunk rulebook was for cybercrime but it's pointing at something that already exists and saying "this is a thing we are going to tell an exaggerated story about".
