What's surprising to me is that internal migration in the US is actually down from its peak. People today are more likely to live in or close to their hometown than they were in the 20th century. Part of this is simply because urbanization goes only one way.

People cannot afford to move to places where the economies are booming, because their standard of living with higher pay and higher costs is the same as if they stayed where they are. Moving to opportunity used to be worth it, but is less so now outside of specific fields.
