If the shortest route from your current location to the English channel crosses the M4 then you're in the north, otherwise you're not.

If the shortest route from your current location to the English channel crosses the M4 then you're in the north, otherwise you're not.
Anything outside the M25 is “The North”, regardless of latitude.
