Do you find the folks on Shark Tank cuddly? I think adversarial is fine. Anyway, I believe an applicable phrase is 'not mutually exclusive'. The 'finally, a worthy adversary' bit from Comic Books comes to mind.
A business relationship that's both adversarial and transactional? How untoward. Only kidding: that's the nature.
