This makes for a good story, but if in fact a part of their wifi setup was outdoors, wouldn't that be the first place you start checking?

This was my thought exactly. The much more boring but accurate title would be "Outdoor point-to-point wifi bridge system affected by weather"
Yep, the nonstandard part of their setup absolutely should have been the first thing to consider. Feels a bit disingenuous to not mention that part straight away.
