Guideline. Guidelines are not laws. Want to know what else is an HN guideline? "Please don't complain that a submission is inappropriate" right along with "Please don't post comments saying that HN is turning into Reddit".

And even if it were true that it's a law, it would still be entirely irrelevant to the discussion of whether it's dumb or not.
