In the 1980s, the USSR made one of the best onscreen adaptations of Sherlock Holmes, starring Vasily Livanov as Sherlock Holmes and Vitaly Solomin as Dr. Watson. The filming locations were all Soviet, with the old town of Riga doubling up as London.
Despite its issues, it is remarkably faithful to the source material. The Reichenbach Falls scenes are remarkable. I would put it as my second or third favourite adaptation, behind the British one with Jeremy Brett.
