Imagine choosing to be an expert in something that you think is a coin flip away from making the world worse.
I don't think you can just invert it like that. There's probably a significant percentage of respondents who think it might not have much impact.
You can be concerned and optimistic at the same time.
Isn't this an extremely reasonable thing to do? To take an extreme example, consider people working on gain-of-function virology research.
I can't imagine most people working on gain-of-function virology expect it to make the world worse.
