Why the humanoid form, with all of its engineering inefficiencies and difficulties? Because it is a thing which can be dominated.

The whole purpose is domination. Ever seen Apocalypse now or read Heart of Darkness? They are little colonel Kurtzes. The will to dominate for these people goes to the depths of their soul.
