You can torrent and seed these models via torrenting. They are not piracy so there's no problem hosting them besides maybe not having enough bandwidth

Interesting ideas, maybe the real open alternative will indeed be torrents.
... You wouldn't steal a car ... you wouldn't steal a bag ... piracy is a crime. (Girl cancels the download and walks away from the PC. Remember? :-))
That is what will happen to torrents. Followed by VPNs. China, Russia and Iran had paved the way already.
