This sets the precedence that any entity providing encrypted services who refuses to provide US backdoors can be hit with a terrorist designation, anyone using them becomes criminalized by association. Even Apple would now have to kowtow or face the emperor's wrath.
In 2030: "You have DeltaChat installed on your GrapheneOS phone? Why would you use that unless you're a terrorist? Good citizens use government-blessed choices, like Signal and iPhone once they passed the Freedom2029 compliance mandate."
Fwiw, the FBI use Signal regularly, and it's approved for some specific use cases. Don't ask how I know ;)
There are ways to ascertain how and when a person is using their device by analyzing Signal's metadata, then build a predictive model based on months of daily usage to infer when they're most likely about to pick up their phone.
Delta Chat is years behind Signal's protections, and its claims of "zero metadata" are straight up lies. SimpleX has at least four remote execution zero days that I'm aware of, all relating to media processing. I told Evgeny to make the blur effect actually hash the image instead of acting like an overlay, but I was repeatedly ignored before being set as an "observer" role in the SimpleX Public Group.

It is already like this: "why would you want privacy, what do you have to hide?" is often repeated.
Just think of the push towards cashless, in some areas cash is considered antisocial: I have seen fools that should be humble frown in front of it, silently screaming that "every good citizen sends his practices to the twelve largely anonymous private-public data collectors established by european law (and through monetic from the USA)" - the manipulation of the ignorant, in which vilty becomes pride...
On the individual side of things, we see people that cross a red line getting all their cloud and social media accounts nuked on the same day. That's been the case for a long time.
