I actually really like not having backlight, forcing me to use non-directional yellow light during the night reading sessions. I wish all electronic screen were like that.

I generally disbelieve in anti-features. You can just... not use the backlight! It's frustrating when people insist on a lack of features. There's no practical downside to backlights being an option.
It's an additional layer on top of the eink that has to diffuse light from the side. It's bound to reduce contrast at least a little
The backlight of the X4 Pro have configurable "warmth" of the backlight, works pretty good even in completely dark rooms and much better than the eye-train you get from traditional screens.
