No, the point was that instead of cities waiting until self-driving cars become an option to help get rid of terrible drivers, the cities could invest in public transportation today, and get better road safety that way.

Not everyone wants to live in a big smelly crowded city. And those old people? You think they're going to walk 5 blocks and hopefully catch a bus? I lived in a city with great public transit and I walked a TON. Couldn't imagine doing it on old crotchetty legs.
