I don't see any technical difference? On HN, you scroll through an algorithmically generated list of submissions, vote them up and down, and post and vote on comments. This is pretty similar to FB. Just replace "cat videos" with "pelicans on bikes".
I think HN is good, BTW.
Well, one very important difference is that on HN everyone is served the same algorithm.
And one other even more important difference is that Y Combinator does not make money from HN and so have very different incentives than Facebook.
