My mother was an acquaintance of Warren Zevon's and she introduced me to him when I was a teenager in early August 2002, in a sort of casual "Hey Warren I'd like you to meet my son."

After the introduction I stood there and listened to the adults speak as a child often does in that kind of situation and he was lamenting that he hadn't been feeling well for awhile and he wasn't looking it either.

So my mother did what one does in that kind of situation which was insist that he go to the doctor and he kind of hummed and hawed at it because he didn't like doctors but finally said that he should do that.

That was a few weeks before he was diagnosed with cancer and about a year before he passed away. It's just one of those little experiences that kismet gifted me and I think of it often. More so now that I've gotten into his music over the past few years.

Like the author of this blog post I sometimes come across that final Letterman interview with Zevon and reflect on it and that powerful but simple line "Enjoy Every Sandwich" that Zevon offhandedly made.

It makes me reflect on how I want to continue to live a long and healthy life so that I can continue to have those kind of neat fleeting experiences of meeting people and just... witnessing life.

That reflection also made me realize that I should aspire to enable others to have those sorts of experiences so I have started to volunteer more at organizations which I feel can make that happen. It's rewarding and encouraging. It makes me feel like the world is a little bit less of a terrible place. If only for a moment.
