Yeah, the author's opinion would be way more justified if Rails were an open-source project with thousands of contributors and not just the hard work of DHH himself in total isolation.

The author's opinion about the direction of rails would be more justified if he was a contributor, which he doesn't appear to be.
But no, you mischaracterize my position, which is that his opinion would be way more justified if he was critiquing someone who had led a failure, or if he had some really valuable insight that DHH didn't have, or if he had led something even more successful than what DHH has managed.
I'm not seeing how DHH's success has any bearing at all. The captain has announced that the ship is sinking. In fact, he left in a lifeboat several months ago. Whether or not he was a good captain has nothing to do with how the remaining passengers should handle his departure.
