I guess a lot of highly intelligent people relied on their smarts to coast to tenure and then all the way to retirement.

Have you worked in academia? I have and I have never seen anyone coast to becoming a tenured mathematics professor.
I don't talk about stuff I don't know about.
Please let me know where one can coast towards tenure, thanks!
