How often do WW2 or WW1 bombs actually explode, injuring or killing people? I would have thought that, for every bomb found and defused (or controlled-exploded) there would be one that isn't detected and banged around a bit...

It probably depends, but for example in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, between 1000 and 2000 bombs are found and defused each year. The last uncontrolled explosion was in 2014, killing one person.
