Off grid does not mean "no interaction" or "no contribution". The "Hundred Rabbits" people contribute knowledge, view it as their mission to work on resilience and of course they interact with people a lot. What they do has next to nothing in common with the "I want to build my society of one and have nothing to do with the rest of humanity" perspective. In my experience, the latter approach is most often the result of being hurt too much by life experiences (so it benefits from a much kinder perspective than the one you imply) while other forms of off-grid-ish experiments are often very explicitly driven by a desire to contribute.

From their About page[0]:

  > Because of the decentralized nature of our work, this has to be spelled out quite clearly: Preparing for impending apocalyptic events should mean _collective action and structural reform_, not individualism and isolation.

We shouldn't equate "the (power/water) grid" and all of society. The grid is a small subset.
