I think that's a pretty myopic outlook, there are way more than a 1000 applied mathematicians working in fields were their skills are useful outside of academia (and not just in finance), even those who live off of teaching contribute to the raising of the floor.
I’m not saying they are not important, I was wondering whether they can be replaced by AI, or if their managers are tempted to do that, in the future. That’s something I don’t know so I was wondering.
But overall my previous post is more about academic Mathematicians, thus the “pushing out papers no one reads” part.
