Yeah it's more because they wanted the high speed trains to go super fast because bigger number is better, in reality it dramatically increases the impact of the track you build - corners have to be wider, gradients have to be avoided, and offsets (and the land you need to purchase for them) need to be bigger.
I suppose we could go back to horse and carriage, or just walk everywhere, but the point of trains is to get people where they're going in a reasonable amount of time.
I want trains to go faster because it gives me more time in my day, not because bigger numbers look better.
Faster does seem to be preferable for a line that runs over a hundred miles, I have to agree.
