This "gap in understanding" doesn't seem like a situation that would last for very long, because AI companies have every incentive to market the shit out of the capabilities of their models to the public. And yet they don't - why?

A lot of people have completely tuned out that kind of marketing now. We're in an era where the feeds are filled with so much BS that people don't know what to believe anymore.

the value of their products are realised jn profit cost arbitrage. not in convincing the bottom 80% their products work.

Valuation, by saying that they have something "exceptional" in the works it keeps up the valuation up until the IPOs.

Also, I think programmers/mathematicians (the ones that should be calling out bullshit) are enthralled because many of our jobs was so suitable to automation (this was the secret of the 10x engineers, they didn't shit out too much unnecessary crap.. now that unnecessary crap is spit out at rocket-speed so everyone is working at that speed or even faster).

That said, information-gruntwork that a nominally competent person could do is up for grabs and many previously so called "bullshit" jobs were tied to that.
