Yep, if you're gonna redneck the generator after a hurricane, you'd wanna disconnect your house from the grid. One trick in more rural areas is to have your power meter hooked up to one panel, and then your house panel be a "sub panel" to this main panel. Now you can shutdown your main panel and still redneck your house.

The better way (and legal way) to do this is to have a generator plug plug installed, this way when you switch over to generator your property is disconnected from the grid.
