"glyphs are exactly 1/2em wide". whut. 1em is the width of the M character. glyphs are exactly 1 em wide, they just happen to have a slim m.

A more useful definition of an em is the nominal font height.
Moreover, that is the dimension used for the em-space and em-dash.
