Carlo cipolla (sp?) has an interesting framework for this. He broke people down into four high level categories.

Intelligent peoples actions benefit both themselves and others.

Bandits are people whose actions benefit themselves while harming others.

Helpless peoples actions cause losses to themselves while benefiting others.

Stupid people's actions cause harm to others while deriving no gain (and often harming themselves)
