Jobs and money are bottom of pyramid needs. If we answer those with UBI I guarantee you status and purpose are the next ones.

Chess players vs stockfish isn't a good comparison because chess fans only care about the performance of maybe the top-50 players.

People may gain and be satisfied among their own peer groups. All good and healthy if that peer group is your local badminton club or knitting circle - something where effort and skill have rewards and people can make objective, tangible progress. But groups not oriented around such activities could turn even more toxic.
