I very very much doubt this. Tools are what sets us apart from other animals. We have dedicated bits of brain for it. The relation between humans and tools, having importance to us, is why we're special. That relation goes way back, with evolutionary pressure the whole way, when losing a tool meant you were in a very bad situation, probably dead, unless you replaced it.

People named ships, swords, etc, going way back in history. There are fables about dedications to tools. It's not some modern thing.
