There has always been peoples personal forks and random one man hobby projects on Github. I think the Artcraft project is a good example of what's to come. Gimp would have never accepted thousands of commits to convert it in to a replica of Photoshop, and they shouldn't have to. The people who want to go full speed AI programming can run their own project and don't have to bother the Gimp maintainers.
