Circa 2013, one course in our masters program (hydrogeology) allowed us to pick and choose an assignment question. There was a 5000 word essay (can't remember topic) or build flow models using analytical solutions and discuss their limitations. Most people picked the former while I picked the latter. Bugs werent penalised as the ultimate secondary lesson was about "black boxes" and never to rely on numerical model outputs without calculating analytical solutions to verify by hand.
