It’s incredible just how quickly Google and Apple folded to the will of their country’s king renaming stuff.

Google and Apple have a policy of showing every user what their own government officially recognises. For the entire history of Google maps there have been disputed borders and names where Google just shows users different results based on their location.

  • Except Canadians who noticed that it was Lake America?

Oops, sorry, didn’t notice you were in Canada eh?

Likely story. No way Google could tell Canada and the US apart.

Exactly like that time Google and Apple folded to the will of our country's Biden Administration, renaming 650 stuffs?

  • Sorry is this a joke I don’t get?

    • OP is attempting to draw a connection between renaming international bodies of water with longstanding, internationally recognized names with renaming a few small local hills, valleys and landmarks, ignoring size and scale and the motivation behind the renaming.

    • $PRESIDENT asked people to call $PLACE by $NEWNAME for political reasons. Some people and companies did, including Google and Apple.

By using the words "folded to the will of their country’s king" that poster is implying the President did an illegitimate power grab and the companies ought to have kept the old name on their maps.

The reply is pointing out that if this was really the issue, people should have applied the same logic in the prior instance when PRESIDENT="Biden" and PLACE="Squaw Harbor, Alaska".

I don't think it's intended to be a joke at all, rather it's suggesting the line of reasoning is inconsistent / hypocritical.

We should have a society where every website operator should be able to make an honest living selling ads to everybody who wants information. Instead our public discourse is so messy and angry that any action or inaction gets labelled as an outrageous, inflammatory political choice that pisses off half the country. (This paragraph is my personal opinion.)
